You get a cold, the flu, bronchitis…. everyone recommends you up your dosage of Vitamin C. Diagnosed with cancer, your doctor will probably suggest adding Vitamin C to your supplement list. This is because Vitamin C is a very powerful fighter of free radical damage in the body…..and since the body cannot make Vitamin C we have to get it from outside sources. But here are the major problems:
PROBLEM ONE: If diagnosed with a life threatening disease like cancer, of course the very frightened patient will run out and load up on Vitamin C supplements not knowing that the body can only absorb 10% of Vitamin C from supplements. We pee the rest out, making for expensive urine. Whereas our bodies can absorb up to 80% of Vitamin C from plant based foods. Our bodies have a natural synergistic relationship with fruits and vegetables. The Divines gracious gift for keeping us well and helping us heal disease. This is why healing with large doses of Vitamin C rich foods is one of the first defenses in fighting any disease condition. Good health is not about the vitamins you excrete; it’s about the vitamins you retain.
PROBLEM TWO: Ninety-five percent of Vitamin C, including synthetic Vitamin C injections (also used for skin whitening) are imported from China….now I would not feed my pup Lillian Chinese dog food because their standards are so lax…I sure the heck advise against Vitamin C made in China. China’s food scandals are becoming increasing frequent and bizarre; ‘glow in the dark’ pork, exploding melons, fake eggs and tainted baby food.
The US Supreme Court ruled unanimously against a group of Chinese Vitamin C producers in a long-running antitrust battle. How it will play out is still in the works.
Do your research when your health is at risk and stay away from anything made in China, except maybe flip-flops. Right now the FDA has limited resources to protect the public’s health.
CREATING SOLUTIONS
Many of us modern-day people are deficit eaters, attempting to obtain our vitamins from a selection of nutritionally weak foods. To ramp up your consumption of Vitamin C, here some food sources that contain a whopping amount of the precious vitamin:
> CHILI PEPPERS: Chili peppers obviously house seeds and therefore are classified as a fruit. This tiny fruit can be found anywhere in the world. To get the most benefits be sure to add it to your salsa Raw. High heat kills 80% of the precious Vitamin C.
1 Chili Pepper: 107 mg. of Vitamin C
> KIWI: This cute little fuzzy fruit is loaded with Vitamin C and tastes great with a little lime on it or added to blender drinks. Tip: If you buy them in an American market, they may still be hard. Wait several days for them to soften. I love mine really, really soft.
2 Kiwi: 137.2 mg. Vitamin C
> RED BELL PEPPER: This is one of the queens of Vitamin C, with almost 4 times more Vitamin C than an orange. Cut up a generous amount and add to your daily salad.
1 Red Bell Pepper: 190 mg. Vitamin C
> BLACK CURRANTS: The small black currant is not a fruit but a berry that grows on a bush. You can usually purchase them dried in your health food market. Particularly high in Vitamin C, they can be eaten by the handful for a snack, dressed on top of cereal or salad, even soaked overnight and added to your blender drinks.
One Ounce Black Currants: 90 mg. Vitamin C
CLOSING NOTE: If you have been brought up in America, then you know we have all been conditioned to get our Vitamin C from oranges and orange juice. Commercial orange juice is always pasteurized. The high heat destroys Vitamin C. To make up for the loss many companies supplement the juice with synthetic Vitamin C. Where do most of the Vitamin C supplements come from? You guessed it…. China. On the other hand there is nothing wrong with a lovely orange or fresh squeezed orange juice. Just know that there are other foods with more Vitamin C.
> 1 Orange: 51.1 mg. Vitamin C
