This is my contribution to September’s ‘Uterine Cancer Awareness Month’. My wish is for a happier, healthier world through living in touch with what our bodies have to teach us and using Food As Medicine to make that happen.
The family of words that are related to the English word “menstruation” include mental, memory, meditation, magnetic, and mania, as well as creator, originator, designer. During our menstrual years we women are synchronized with the waxing and waning of the moon, the tides and the oceans. We are designed to expand and contract with the universe as we age and change. This brilliant power is so connected to the root of life we can be forgiven if we can barely wrap our minds around the immensity of it all.
I had struggled my whole adult life with chronic menstrual problems up to the time I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. If I knew then what I know now, I feel certain I could have saved myself from a whole world of pain and suffering.
What I know now is no part of the body is separate. Within our body is a river of information….all parts in dynamic communication with everything else. An unhealthy uterus that presents with fibroids, cysts, endometriosis and cancer is just a reflection of the health of the whole body. Often Western medicine will take a ‘wait and watch’ approach, prescribing medication for discomfort, without making the important connection between the symptoms and the woman’s health habits, food choices and self care.
Today’s modern chemical filled foods are a blip in our historical food chain. Humans have been on Earth for around 150,000 years. Yet we cannot point to any other time in history we have been willing to consume so many substances that would not be considered whole foods. This amazing body we have been gifted with is so connected to the natural rhythms of ancient life on Earth that we cannot trick it by skipping breakfast, then having a low calorie artificial sweetened soda drink at mid-morning, an energy bar with synthetic chemicals and vitamins for lunch, a low-fat yogurt at three, and a microwaved Lean Cuisine frozen meal for supper. Something will have to give, and it will be your precious health.
For many of us in a modern world who have been taught to treat menstruation as a nuisance and an on going inconvenience, I ask you to look again, awaken to that small, wise intuitive voice of wisdom in all of us. That voice of our own body that we have been forced to ignore through our culture’s illness, misinformation and dysfunction. Because that is where the self love is; that is where the empowerment lies.
I wish I had learned early on that my fibroid filled uterus was the body’s messenger system trying to get my attention. That my menstrual blood was the same blood feeding my cells, heart and brain, and that I was toxic from head to toe and needed to get clean, ASAP. A warning that my body was dangerously out of balance. My wake-up call was uterine cancer. That small voice inside me became a roar. It was high time to listen, learn to live in a new way….and present my contribution to Uterine Cancer Awareness Month.
“When women menstruate, the color, odor and texture of the menstrual blood can provide invaluable information as to the well-being of the women”, says Dr Laui Grossman of the American Medical College Of Homeopathy. “These signs can be early signals of developing illness.” No matter what you have been taught, or led to believe, a clean body, and its intimate functions, should smell clean and sweet.
When you take the time and attention to cleanse your body of toxins, drink plenty of water and load the body up with All Organic All Vegan leafy green salad herbs made of spinach, baby kale, romaine lettuce, topped with red pepper, green onion, and ripe avocado…..add to that mix fresh juices made from carrots, beets, celery, green apple and lemon, add to that live unpasteurized fermented foods daily, something magical begins to happen. That deep place in you begins to believe in your body again, and your body begins to trust you again, and together in symbiotic communion a new understanding of healing happens. It’s a beautiful thing, and amazing things bloom from it.

Does one cleanse fit all? Pretty much. Foods close to Nature do not change and their ability to heal does not change. The Truth is the Truth.
Much love and support to all our efforts to reclaim our precious health.
