This week the winds blew in gusts of 100 miles an hour in LA, closing down LAX airport, before heading to us in New Mexico. My little cold frames were snug and safe, my little greenhouse alive with beet greens, rainbow chard and onion greens. When the winds stopped, then came the snow. Yet all was well in my winter garden. For me this was so empowering, more than enough encouragement to keep me going until Spring!
I love to garden, and it’s easy for me to grow some of my own food if I keep it small. I love love love growing food, but I have so many interests that a large garden plot would quickly get out of hand for me. Once you’re introduced to the idea of NOT needing a whole truck farm to get involved in growing some of your favorite greens, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
Folks are going wild with growing in tiny tiny yards, and there are even micro green balconies. Fifty percent of the population now lives in large urban areas. This gives us a great opportunity to experiment. One thing about alternative community, give them a challenge and great ideas will come. The magazine ‘URBAN FARM’, www.urbanfarmonline.com/ which speaks to ‘sustainable city living’, is a great read for ideas and direction. It introduces the reader to cold frame construction, greens that grow best under lights, adopting a beehive (www.adopt a beehive.info), and so many other things urban folks are dreaming up to live a more healthy and self sufficient life. They are getting involved with what Nature has to offer, which is what the Raw Foods LifeStyle is all about; healing our lives by connecting to the living universe.
