Spirulina has been used as a food and nutritional staple for centuries. Early writings document the Aztecs harvesting green algae from lakes by boat, then drying it in the sun to produce a green cake. These cakes were mixed with foods or consumed with water by marathon runners to keep up their strength.
After the 16th century, the great lakes in the Valley of Mexico were drained as part of the Spanish conquest and spirulina vanished from historical record.
But you can’t keep a good food source down. Once a once forgotten remnant of history, spirulina has reemerged to become a worldwide phenomenon. Just in time to help us build up our immune systems to fight COVID-19.
This amazing micro algae contains bio-available iron, has 26 times more calcium than cow’s milk, all the B vitamins including B-12, and is packed with vegan plant-based protein. Protein is used by the body to construct, maintain and repair every tissue, from our muscles, nerves, heart, blood, liver and lungs. Spirulina is loaded with chlorophyll, which helps cleanse the liver and eliminate toxins from the digestive track.
Spirulina is not a true algae but a fresh water relative to sea vegetables like wakame, arame, kelp, nori and dulse. It grows quickly in sweet water lakes and can be cultivated and harvested in many places on Earth. We only buy brands that have not been pasteurized but are dried at low temperatures so we can be sure no nutrients are lost.
Generally the more domesticated our food is, the more vitamin and mineral deficient it is. Vitamin supplements can be tricky with no true FDA regulation system to assure you of their potency. Best to use whole Live Superfoods found in Nature. Add a level teaspoon of spirulina to your favorite smoothie daily to protect the body from immune deficiencies and to be fortified against foreign invaders.
*TIP: We use E3Live spirulina because it is not exposed to high heat during the drying process. Blue-green algae can cause a detoxification reaction if consumed in too large a quantity initially. Start off slowly.
