Most people know eating copious amounts of plant-based nutritious food is good for their health, but tend not to think of the positive impact those same foods have on their teeth. With COVID-19 in full swing, if your like me, you may feel hesitant to enter a small room with your dentist unless it’s an all out emergency.
Now, more then ever, is a good time
to be mindful of the foods you eat.
The health of your teeth has a great deal to do with the Acid/Alkaline Balance in your body. Because saliva filtered into your mouth is derived from bodily fluids, this pH chemistry has everything to do with dental health. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet (SAD) is very acidic. An acidic oral environment is a breeding ground for bacteria, disease and tooth decay. This constant acid bath weakens teeth, erodes enamel, causes chronic cavities and inflamed gums, allowing for broken fillings and loss of teeth.
Just like the rest of your body, your mouth needs a proper pH balance. If you eat an abundance of alkaline foods your saliva will be gentle and kind to your teeth. Because high alkaline foods neutralize the effects of acid foods, a diet that is 80% alkaline/20% acid will fight cavities and tooth decay.
The great news is studies have found that teeth can actually become stronger and re-mineralize when our diet is high in alkaline fruits and veggies, like all Organic:
> Carrots
> Bananas
> Celery
> Almonds and Raw Almond Milk
> Granny Smith Apples (lowest in natural fruit sugars)
> Avocados
> Grapes
> Sea Vegetables
> Wheat Grass Juice
